Recreation

Fang and I had dinner out last night at Spark's Steakhouse. Spark's is considered one of the better New York steakhouses, but I'd offer it's hardly on a par with Keen's, Old Homestead or Peter Lugar. Still, we're an equal opportunity steakhouse couple so we gave it a try.

Alas, the service was lackadaisical, the food was mediocre and the ambiance akin to a weary bordello filled with T-shirted tourists. I was not impressed.

As we left, I reminded Fang that gangland boss Paul Castellano was gunned down in front of Spark's in 1985 as he left after dinner. Without flinching, Fang ordered me to have my camera at the ready. And on cue, he flung himself to the pavement in a recreation of the death scene at Spark's. Passing pedestrians were disinterested. This is a tough town.It was a brilliant moment. I didn't have the heart to tell him that Castellano actually died face up. But that's between you and me.
