Les Trocks

My friend Brooklyn Sue invited me to join her and her mother for a matinee yesterday of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. I saw this fabled ensemble years ago in San Francisco and I was keen to see them again. However, the greater lure was seeing my dear friend (who I have known for *uhem* maybe 32 years). It was a date.

The weather was hardly accommodating. There was snow on the ground, it was blustery and bitter cold. It was the kind of day where most sound mortals would wrap up in a blanket and sequester inside watching bad television. I dressed and braved a somber and very slow subway. Upon arriving, I tracked down Sue and her sweet mother. We exchanged pleasantries and found our very good seats for the show.

What you may know about The Trocks is that they are a ballet ensemble of all men, most of them in drag. What you may not realize is that they are classically trained and incredibly true to the ballets they replicate. If you believe that a male ballet dancer can't dance en pointe, you are deluded. Not only do The Trocks dance in toe shoes with ballerina-like grace, they are extraordinary. Yes, they infuse satire into the allegory but they are clearly profound dance professionals. I adored the show. If you ever get a chance to see them, please do. You will be astounded.

I thoroughly enjoyed the brief time with Sue and her Mom. Missus K is a charming woman who looked very chic in her leopard print winter hat. She clearly adores her children. Brooklyn Sue is one of the most creative people I've ever known. She is, by profession, a graphic artist. Yet she has a flamboyant and creative flair in all she does. She arrived at the theater in a sumptuous purple jacket with hood. She has a gorgeous cascading mane of mahogany brown hair. He cheeks were flush, her eyes vivid and the solid native New Yorker she is was clearly on display. She's as kind as a person can be--unpretentious, thoughtful and fun. I found myself thinking, it's no wonder I've known you most of my life. You are a delightful person.

The show ended with an encore. The Trocks donned green Statue of Liberty crowns and did a Rockettes worthy kick line to "New York, New York." The crowd went wild. Oh of course, I loved it.

It was a lovely evening. It was so worth going out in the snow.
