Oh, The Places You Will & Will Not Go

On one of our commutes home last week, I threw this question to Hollaback Girl: If you had a choice, select the top ten places you would be willing to, nay, be desirous of moving to if you had to leave New York. Conversely, what are your top ten "I'd go kicking and screaming, not over my dead body" places? She thought about it and popped out with a few interesting choices (Iceland and Oregon stand out in my memory as some go-to places, but I'm sure she will entertain us with her fully realized line up in due course). I had to think about it too.

I've been lucky enough to live in San Francisco and New York and I regard them both with equal affection. Those are rather wonderful cities; could there be other places where I might consider living? A few come to mind:

1. Chicago, IL
2. Miami, FL
3. Vancouver, British Columbia
4. Brussels, Belgium
5. Palm Springs, CA
6. Wilmington, NC
7. Berlin, Germany
8. Florence, Italy
9. Boston, MA
10. Savannah, GA

Places on the "Oh, no, never" list:

1. Tokyo, Japan
2. Flint, MI (all due respect to my Michigan homies--I do like the rest of the state)
3. Athens, Greece
4. Dallas, TX
5. Las Vegas, NV
6. Beijing, China
7. Boise, Idaho
8. Dublin, Ireland
9. New Delhi, India
10. Hayes, Kansas

If I have insulted your hometown, I do apologize. I live in one of the biggest, filthiest cities on planet earth so do feel free to fling it back at me full tilt.

And while you're at it, tell me where you'd like to go.

*laugh* I grew up in Flint... spent the first 25 years of my life there, and still have family there. But do I miss it? Not even a little.

I'm kind of surprised that you've been there, I mean... who goes to Flint?

Places I might like to live:

1.) Boston, MA
2.) Portland, ME
3.) San Diego, CA
4.) Napa Valley, CA (okay, not really a city, but anywhere in the area will do.)
5.) London
6.) Nice, France
7.) Tuscany
8.) Key West, FL
9.) Virginia Beach, VA
10.) Oranjestad, Aruba

Places I wouldn't live even if you poked me with a sharp stick:

1.) Forrest City, Arkansas
2.) Houston, TX
3.) Los Angeles, CA
4.) New York City (I love to visit but I just couldn't live there. Too intimidating for a suburban gal like me.)
5.) Venice, Italy
6.) Hong Kong
7.) Fargo, ND
8.) Minneapolis, MN
9.) Hoboken, NJ
10.) Orlando, FL

Aww, poor Caryl! I visited Houston once for work and I was not impressed. I mean, does the air ever move there at all? I usually hate air conditioning but in Houston - in October, for crap's sake - I couldn't get enough AC. The air was soooo heavy. The city was not all that good looking and all I remember clearly is all the billboards for churches, which I thought was really, really weird.

I did have a good steak somewhere on the outskirts of Houston, but I could have sworn I heard the theme song from Deliverance playing in the background. I can't get over how around there you can go from city to NOTHING in just a few miles.

I do believe my experience in Flint was colored by the fact that I got stuck in the airport due to a snowstorm in winter and had to stay in Flint for 24 hours. It was hell, I fear. I'm open minded, though. And that WAS ten years ago.

And Tif, I confess...I really liked Mississippi. The people made the place for me. They were hospitable as all get out.

Hey! Don't knock Houston. I lived there in 5th through 7th grades. I loved it...best Jr. High School ever. But then again, it was 150 years ago. I guess things change...
