Office Romance

My friend Norma sent me a link recently for a site called "Urban Word of The Day." I had to sign up for it--occasionally, it's genius. Most of the words are those that have wondered into the lexicon of everyday usage. Today's word was "Office Hot." The definition was "A person that may or may not be hot, but is the most attractive person in the set of people you work with do you lust after him/her." You gotta love that.

We do spend a majority of our time at work. You form alliances with people you work with and develop close friendships with a select few. Sometimes you do harbor a fascination with a work colleague because they are "office hot" but more often than not, it never comes to anything. Which is probably wise. I can't imagine facing someone every day in a serious business situation after they've been on top of you (or vice versa) all night. It's still nice to think about, though, when trapped in a three hour sales meeting.

In our New York office, there are some generally good looking people. Male and female, they are young and vibrant, fashion forward and cool in that urbane city manner. In our Connecticut office, it's a bit of a stretch. I mean, you're pushing "office hot" once you venture over the border. But there is a standout or two.

Most businesses discourage romantic fraternalism between colleagues. The premise suggests it will compromise objective decision making and create discomfort. Perhaps that's true but it's hard to quiet chemistry should it arise. I know quite a few couples who met and fell in love at work. They went on to different companies and fulfilling careers and they enjoy happy lives together. I like to think that's the most important objective. It can happen and it does happen.

I'm a fan of the show "The Office." I have been completely caught up in the furtive office romance between Pam and Jim (above). It's sweet and fumbling and correct, yet you know the chemistry between them will ultimately win out. It takes "office hot" to a whole new level.

I'm all for office romance! I met my husband at work. Of course, I worked in the office and he worked in the factory, which is a little more like Pam and Roy, I guess, but my husband is cuter like Jim and does not have the tendency to throw things at mirrors in bars.

My husband is definitely the hottest thing in my office! But then, I work at home.
