Good Lord. Even the Webster worthy explanation is labored.
I could blame the current political, economic or business environment in these challenging times for the over-use of this new buzzword. I have tried in my daily work environment to count how often the word "transparent" (and favored derivative "transparency") has been trotted out. I've lost count. These days, it's used way too often. It's used too often on "The McNeil Report" and in Obama's speeches and in Wall Street reports and from the UAW. It dribbles from the lips of all those enjoying government bailouts and those who feel the need to redeem themselves from their past involvements. It's the 2009 version of absolution and I'm starting to find its' use rather tedious.
Sounds genuine and earnest in theory, but is anyone completely truthful and laid bare in their intent? Come on now. No wise person leaves their intentions vulnerable. Even in dire times, the need to keep some key details close to the vest is still critical. We are somewhat transparent with our friends, with our family, yes. Are we transparent in more competitive environments like work, finance and great big scary global markets? Yeah, that fairly reeks of bullshit.
I disdain buzzwords generally because I consider the use of them in business vernacular as shallow. It's easy to fling about the buzzword du jour and sound authoritative. I believe in the purity of the concept--the truthful practice is quite another story. When we say we are transparent, are we genuinely? I mean, the whole hog, no holds barred, balls to the wall genuine? That requires a lot more vulnerability and that's a big sacrifice in business life (if not personal).
So this particular buzzword is my current sharp edged thorn. I also recognize that I am a rather black and white kinda gal so I'm open to your feedback, rebukes and jibes. Just to be transparent about it and all.

It is 'apparent' to me that you have hit the nail on the head.
Being a student and house frau these days...I can't speak to that functionality....buzz words scar for life
