I've been glued to CNN the past few days watching the events of tomorrow's inauguration unfold: The Presidential progress from Philadelphia to DC, so reminiscent of the old whistle stop political tours. The speeches and musical extravaganza from the capitol steps. The playing of Ray Charles' brilliant version of "America" piped out to the swooning masses. There are so many events leading up to Tuesday's ultimate event, that I feel a bit overwhelmed.
The networks are covering this breathlessly with 24-hour coverage. Even hardened journalists like Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann seem to be gushing. The crowds are nearly delirious. It's exciting to see a revitalized America despite the adversities affecting this country but I hear a common theme that concerns me.
There is tremendous excitement about the incoming 44th President. I share that excitement and confidence in our new commander in chief. However, there's an expectation that president-elect Obama is going to be the superhuman saviour of this country which puts an incredible amount of pressure on this mere mortal. Over the past few days, I have seen several commercials selling commemorative crockery with Obama's image adorning it (thank you, Franklin Mint). I hear people on the street comparing him with Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Jesus. If I were Mr. Obama right now, I would be scared shitless.
I do believe he's the right leader for this country. However, the expectation that's already prevailing upon him is beyond tremendous. I can foresee that on his first misstep (and everyone has one) a maelstrom of criticism will be heaped upon him. The hype of the media and the extreme adulation of the American public is setting him up for failure.
I hope that's not the case. I believe in his vision. I believe in his progressive reforms. I believe he's representative of the new values and cultures that are America today. I just hope he doesn't fuck it up.
On the plus side, tomorrow should be the last day I have to hear the paused and folksy drawl of the 43rd President's voice.

If the last time I have to see Bush is standing there watching Obama getting sworn in - it will be too many times seeing him.
