I promise you, patient readers, this is the last you'll ever read on this topic.
I had to watch the American Idol finale tonight. To be honest, I was already over who would win. I wanted to watch for the music.
I understand in the past the producers of this show pull out all the big guns for the finale. Big stars! Huge stage numbers! The creme de la creme! I turned the TV on at 8 pm and amped up the connecting stereo. Give me some big music--mama wants to dance.
It was an auspicious start. Seal and Salesha started a duet and they were rocking. The volume inched up. I shook my ample hind quarters around the living room. It was a useless warm-up. Cue the line of has-been musical stars promoting their comeback albums. Donna Summer warbled through a few songs. Michael Myers shamelessly promoted his new movie. an AARP worthy (and I should know) Bryan Adams banged out his comeback single. George Michael (looking like a diner owner in Tenafly, New Jersey) wobbled through some contrived ballad. Graham Nash played a 30 year old hit. I made a pot of coffee to keep awake.
Come on, now. Where were past Idol winners? Well, they did feature a performance by Carrie Underwood (displaying rather spectacular gams). Her deal with the devil (that would be Clive Davis) isn't set to expire for another year. No Daughtry or Clarkson or Hicks. Jordin Sparks (last year's winner) did a forgettable song. She's a fabulous girl, but honey, who dressed you in that gold shower curtain?
And I was expecting star power. Usher was on "Dancing With the Stars" last night, fer chrissakes. I'd expect Kanye or Mary J. Blige or Rihanna on this mother of all finales but no, because apparently George Michael was available.
It may have been an unforgettable finale but the outcome made me leap off the couch. At the risk of spoiling it for my homies in the western regions, I'll just say this: America Got It Right.
And so back to my regularly life and summer re-runs.

I only watched the last minute and a half. Didn't miss anything huh!
This show is going to hell!
Haven't you heard? Taylor couldn't perform cause he's singing on a friggin CRUISE SHIP.
As my ex said during the show, "They should just play old Ed Sullivan reruns for an hour and 45 minutes, then announce the winner." I think I'd enjoy that immensely more than the drivel they offered us. Pitiful.
OH, but let me say THAT WIN WAS ALL WORTH IT!!!! Cook is the best. :-)
I can't believe I watched the whole thing. The finale the year Taylor won was phenomenal. I didn't watch last year, what a waste of tv time, and this year, it really lacked any sort of luminosity. I didn't even know who a lot of the 'stars' were. However, I was so thrilled to hear David Cook's name announced. I felt all along he was the best one and the most deserving.
Thanks C&W for allowing this little space for my comments. Now on to better things......
Can you believe it. I'm so proud to be an American. My roomie & I high-fived and even got a little teary. I think it shocked everyone. YAY - the little shit didn't win.
And so whoever won now belongs to the AI machine and can kiss his own mind, body and soul goodbye.
Okay, I have to respectfully disagree. I thought last night's show was pretty darn entertaining. Hated Mike Meyers, hated George Michael. Jordin was a drag. But, I loved Seal. Enjoyed Graham Nash with Brooke. Bryan Adams sounded good even if he looked odd. They didn't exploit any mentally challenged auditioners (You Are My Brother guy knew exactly what he was in for.) Loved the David Cook Guitar Hero commercial! (the Davy Archuletta one was creepy - don't want to see the adolescent in his undies.) David Cook with ZZ Top was great - he even did the wobbly legs. As much as little Davy is not my cup of tea, he sounded pretty darn good with One Republic. (The Jonas Brothers should not even be spoken of.) And, Simon apologized! David Cook won. All is good. Best moment - last 5 seconds. Cook's brother looking at the camera and mouthing, "That's my brother!" Loved it.
In the cool, lucid afterglow of the day, I'll give it these caveats to you, Jen. There were some good moments...just not enough to fill two hours. But yes, some highlights for sure.
Cruise ship? Say it ain't so.
Cruise ship. It's so.
Maybe it's a really nice cruise ship!!
