The Nation's Capital

I've been in Washington, DC since yesterday morning attending an annual psychiatric congress (as an exhibitor, not a patient). The weather has been bright and fresh, the cherry trees lining the mall are near the end of their spectacular pink show (but are still awe inspiring) and the streets are pristine and clean. This is a rather fascinating city.

I've been to DC maybe 15 times, yet I've always come here in a business capacity. Coming to a city in a business capacity means you will enjoy a meal or two in a good restaurant but you rarely get a deeper look at a place if you're here for non leisure reasons. In all my visits to DC, I've never been to The Smithsonian or The National Gallery or The Holocaust Museum or Arlington National Cemetery or any of the historic sites the city is known for. I did visit Ford's Theatre ten years ago. I have been to The Mall, The Lincoln Memorial and the gates in front of The White House (and that was only because we got lost and ended up there). I have always meant to return here as a tourist, to finally get a good look at this fine city.

I'll have to put it on my list.

Since I'm only 1 1/2 hours away from DC, I take it for granted. I think you definately need to visit Arlington National Cemetary. Oh, and Georgetown is pretty cool!

I haven't been to DC 15 times and I don't work 2 blocks from the White House, but I've been there a time or two. Don't you think the city is a bitch to get around?

2 semi-interesting facts about me:

1. I participated in a demonstration at the Capital when I was a teenager.

2. My Uncle is a retired four-star General and will be buried in Arlington Nat'l Cemetary. Cool, huh?

caryl, how hard can counting sequential streets and the alphabet be? :-)

(of course, I'm conveniently ignoring the quadrants and state avenues, which are the downfall of many a lost tourist--and occasionally, natives, too.)

Hey, hey, easy there, Joe! Even the brainy CW had a bit of trouble navigating the city: "...that was only because we got lost and ended up there." lol

CW, did you take that photo? It's gorg.
