Crash

I had such great plans for the weekend. I waited all week for this amazing weekend. And typically, when you wait so long for good things, why does the proverbial fly always have to make its way into the ointment?

After a long week and a hellish commute to Manhattan on Friday evening, a group of us celebrated Hollaback's new job at a cozy Mexican eatery in Inwood. We hoisted margaritas and shot the shit. It was a lovely evening.

This was only the start. On the books was a Saturday evening outing with the famous Royal Oak Boys--a dinner at Dinosaur Barbecue followed by "Avenue Q" at the theater. I've wanted to meet these Michigan gents for a very long time so I was really looking forward to it. On Sunday, Fang and I had planned to drive around some parts of Westchester County to suss out places we may want to move to followed by a visit to the famous Frank Pepe's in New Haven for White Clam Pizza. It was a big weekend ahead.

What's that expression? Best Laid Plans?

When I woke up on Saturday morning, I did not feel good. My body felt like I was wearing 75 pounds of chain mail. I had chores to do and errands to run so I resisted the sluggish feeling. Fang and I drove to the uber Stop 'N Shop in Westchester for our bi-monthly shop. I could barely push the cart. When we got home, I found it difficult to unload the cart. My head ached with feverish pain. My body was sore. I felt nauseous. All I wanted to do was sleep. That is most unlike me.

I unloaded the groceries but it took me a long time to do it. I felt compelled to lay down. The truth is, the body is the best barometer of well being. And I was tired. The mind was willing but the body insisted on a break.

People, I crashed. The old body needed a vakay. What could I do? I had to call Hollaback and cancel our night out. And brunch the next day. And anything else I had hoped to do this weekend.

I proceeded to sleep. I slept through the Preakness race on TV. I slept through Fang's version of Jerk Shark Steak for dinner. I slept through John McCain's appearance on Saturday Night Live. I slept like I hadn't slept for years. I finally woke up at 8:45 am this morning. Damn but I needed that. And I was still feeling fatigued.

Maybe it's old age catching up with me, but the truth is I needed a complete mental/physical break. The old body picked the absolutely wrong time to do it, but at least it was on the weekend. I mean, God forbid it happen during the work week.

CW, I get tired just reading your blog. I don't know how you keep the pace you do! :-) I'm sorry that you didn't feel well this weekend, but I'm glad you got a good rest, even if it wasn't of your own accord. Yes, our bodies shut us down when we don't do it voluntarily. Hope you're back to your energizer bunny self soon!

Sometimes our bodies throw a serious temper tantrum and no amount of coaxing or bribing will make it stop. So you just have to wait it out. Damn, sounded like a helluva weekend too. Hope you are feeling better in time for a kick ass Memorial Day.

Didja know that if you're prone to migraines, your body will hold up and carry you through an especially busy time, but as soon as you slow down the migraine will hit?

You would think it would come on while you're stressed and pushing yourself, but the migraine will patiently wait until the "crisis" is over.

Sorry your plans got scrapped, but it's good that you got the rest you needed. I'm with SR, I don't know how you do it!
