Milestone

This week Lego celebrates its 50th anniversary. Generations of creative engineers, wayward artists and challenged kids learned that by pressing squares of convaluted raised dots together, they can create art. There's a certain satisfaction in crafting something realized with Legos; if only something as basic as a block building or something as elaborate as the end product above, a world of imagination is unleashed. That alone should be a reason to celebrate The Lego.

So go build something.

You just gave me flashbacks to walking through my stepdaughter's room not that long ago and not being able to step anywhere without getting stabbed in the foot with a Lego. Now she's going to college next year and you can't step in her room without stepping on clothes. At least it is softer!

Having two sons, we have countless sets of them. Some of them with toddler size bumps, most standard size. They are of every shape, size and color and function. They have transformed into everything from a barnyard fence to a laser cannon. I liken the lego to that episode of Star Trek where the gerbils multiply and threaten the Enterprise. In our house alone they have infiltrated every possible area of the house from their designated bin to couch cushions (a mystery since they aren’t allowed in the living room), the vacuum canister, the toothpaste drawer, and the bottom of my purse. I don’t think I’ve done a load of laundry in six years where I haven’t found some in a pocket. I suspect that, like the cock roach, they have been here through history and will survive Armageddon. Sorry…I feel better now.

I wrote a column about Legos way back when:

Lego my Legos

"I never thought Lego building blocks could make me cry. It happened as I was cleaning out my youngest son's closet. Jamie, my last little baby, turned 13 this year and wants all evidence of his childhood out of his room."
