Anti-Yankee

I know I hardly sound like a representation of a loyal New Yorker when I say I dislike The Yankees. The truth is, I do admire the storied history of Ruth and Gerhig and Mantle and DiMaggio. They are a firm part of the golden age of baseball and large contributors to the lore of the sport. However, the current incarnation of overpaid and over hyped players and the charmless bravado of Steinbrenner has tarnished my view of this storied team now. And to be honest, that sense of arrogant entitlement and superiority that some Yankee fans carry with them like a bad attitude doesn't help. There is a difference between supporting your team and behaving like every other ball club is shit. What happened to sportsmanship? Did Ty Cobb rise from the grave, spikes first?

I'm a National League Girl. I always will be. The Mets are my East Coast team; the Giants are my boys in the West. Women can be fickle so I will confess soft spots for both the Phillies and the Cubs as well. And on rare occasions, I'll cross inter league and root for Boston and the A's.

If you'll pardon the pun, the final strike in cementing my loathing of the boys in pinstripes was in evidence tonight; my commute from Connecticut takes me through Westchester, The Bronx and eventually to the upper West side of Manhattan. My exit is #5. The exit for Yankee Stadium is #4. My commute back to Manhattan today had already cost me two hours of idling in traffic before I had to sit in steamy, stinky, bumper to bumper traffic for yet another hour. The cause of the congestion? Exit #4, of course. Sandwiched between stretch limosines, Hummers and cabs full of boisterous fans does not go very far in engendering affection.

I believe one should always end on a positive note. As such, I'll leave you with this photograph of the Yankees that I really do like. Oh, come on. A girl can dream.

AW! Baseball!

I'm a hard-core Braves fan, but being the fickle woman that I am, I also have a very soft spot in my heart for the Cubbies. Now the Yankees...that's a whole 'nother story!

Here's something I think you'll be able to relate to, CW. Last week I was in Rome Georgia, home to the "Rome Braves" farm team or minor league team or whatever they are (I don't really understand the levels of the minors). My mom, my kids and I attended a game between the Rome Braves and the Savannah Sand Gnats (unfortunate name, yes). It was the most fun I've had at a baseball game since about 1992. We drove right up to the stadium, got right in, had a nice meal in their little restaurant, walked about 100 yards to our seats and enjoyed a real baseball game. There was a relaxed excitement to the thing that I've never experienced at an Atlanta Braves game. We chatted with neighbors, shopped for hats, and left at the 7th inning stretch. No pressure, no hassles and great baseball.

Like everything else in the world, baseball has gotten too dang BIG. Give me a favorite team, a hometown crowd, a shady stadium, and I'm happy. It really doesn't matter who's playing, as long as they have hot dogs and maybe some beer.

I loved this Jules. It has the gentle ease of summer written all over it. I can almost feel the warm breeze. Thanks for this.

Hey, we are on the same wavelength this weekend. I just finished up a post featuring my recent trips to the local college league team game, and a trip to Fenway to see the Sox. And of course, I can appreciate your distaste for the Yankees!

Nice photoshopping skillz there, ha ha!

Whoops--I meant to say (before I accidentally deleted this) that the picture should be credited to our good friend SR. It is her handiwork.
