Have you ever had those periods of time where you get so caught up in...I don't know..your real life that you lose touch with events in the world? Sitting on a slow train into Harlem tonight, I watched a man deliberately dissect the New York Times with slowly descending eyes and I realized (with curious indifference) that I hadn't really watched the news or television or read any newspapers or magazines in nearly two weeks. What's odd, I don't feel the absence.
I can't be bothered to put on the television when I get home anymore. The weekly periodicals are stacking up on the coffee table, their bindings virginal and unsullied. I haven't even read Page Six online and I haven't picked up the free local papers that proffer a bite sized summary of world events. I haven't logged on to my favorite websites which offer snarky views on current culture. I haven't even watched Jon Stewart!! Ye Gods! Should I be concerned by this indifference?
As a matter of habit, I do listen to NPR on the radio at night. In New York, there's an announcer named Soterios Johnson whose voice usually lulls me to sleep as he recaps all things interesting. I woke up at 2 am last night and thought, pay attention to Soterios--he may offer me some vibrant tidbits to fill in the gap of my knowledge. Alas, it was only an earnest dialogue with a local entomologist about the growth of bedbug cases in the US. Needless to say, I suddenly felt the phantom nip of imagined predators and couldn't sleep. What's worse, I didn't supplement the recent lag in my news knowledge. I have been in vacuum...and overseas. Had any monumental events occurred that I really should be aware of?
I'm sort of wondering a couple of things.
-Is the war in Iraq finally over yet? Perhaps that was more wishful thinking on my part than anything. I suppose I would have heard about this one.
-Did anyone famous die, divorce, marry, impregnate, murder, hook up with some skank, slander, drop trou and/or go commando, have plastic surgery or sue the media?
-Any approaching tsunamis I should be aware of?
-OK, how about some pedestrian flash floods in Eastern Europe? A piranha feed frenzy in the Amazon? Mad lamb disease? Buses filled with tourists careening off cliffs in Mexico?
-Did something other than controlled substances kill Anna Nicole Smith?
-Did any politicians inappropriately lure young boys or slander Hilary? Who else has declared their candidacy for President in 2008?
-Has the finale of "American Idol" aired yet? And what's happening on "Heroes?" Has "Lost" been cancelled yet?
-When is baseball's opening day?!!
If anyone can supplement this blissfully ignorant gal's knowledge, well...don't. Just not yet.

It's Wednesday and I only work 1/2 day. I'm home now and after reading your " no news", I realized I haven't checked my mailbox in days....lo and behold, it was jammed with mail, possibly 3 or 4 days worth. The annoying part is 95% is worthless junk and the rest, oh fuck, bills. The weather is great, so that's a plus.
OK, tons of things to do, so I'm off.
Sanjaya is still on American Idol. You have to find pics of his hairdo from last night! Anna Nicole is still dead.
